Why We Created Helpful Hands: A Safe Haven for Mental Health Support
By H.M., CEO & Founder of SavePlace
For too long, access to mental health care has been a privilege rather than a right. As someone who has witnessed firsthand the struggles of marginalized communities in finding safe, understanding, and affordable mental health support, I knew something had to change. That’s why we created Helfulhands—not just as a service, but as a movement.
The Invisible Barriers to Mental Health Care
Mental health struggles do not discriminate. They affect people from all backgrounds, yet access to care is often determined by factors beyond an individual’s control. Marginalized communities—whether due to race, gender identity, financial status, or disability—face disproportionate challenges in getting the help they need.
Some of the biggest barriers include:
1. Stigma and Mistrust
For many, mental health is still a taboo subject. Generational trauma, cultural expectations, and systemic biases have made it difficult for people to seek help without fear of judgment. The fear of being labeled as "weak" or "unstable" keeps far too many from speaking up.
2. Financial Constraints
Even for those who want to seek therapy, the cost can be a significant barrier. Therapy sessions are expensive, insurance coverage is inconsistent, and free services are often overwhelmed with long waitlists. No one should have to choose between paying rent and taking care of their mental health.
3. Lack of Culturally Competent Care
Representation matters. People deserve to talk to therapists and counselors who understand their lived experiences, who don’t dismiss their struggles as “not that bad” or offer advice that disregards cultural and societal contexts. Finding the right therapist shouldn’t feel like searching for a needle in a haystack.
4. Accessibility Challenges
Many mental health facilities are located in areas that marginalized communities struggle to access. Transportation, work schedules, childcare responsibilities, and disability accommodations all play a role in whether someone can realistically seek help.
Helpful Hands: More Than a Platform, a Community
At SavePlace, we wanted to build something that directly addressed these barriers. Here’s how we’re changing the landscape:
Affordable & Transparent Pricing: We believe mental health care should be accessible, not a luxury. Our model ensures that therapy and support services remain affordable, with flexible payment options.
Culturally Competent Care: We prioritize diversity in our network of mental health professionals, ensuring that individuals can find someone who understands their experiences.
Virtual & Flexible Support: No transportation? No problem. Our platform offers virtual therapy, peer support groups, and community-led discussions, allowing people to access help from the comfort of their homes.
A Judgment-Free Zone: At SavePlace, we are dedicated to breaking the stigma. Whether through anonymous forums, resource sharing, or therapist-led workshops, we are creating an environment where vulnerability is met with compassion, not criticism.
A Call to Action
SavePlace was born out of necessity, but it thrives because of the people who believe in our mission. If you or someone you love has struggled to find a safe, affordable, and understanding space for mental health support, we are here for you.
The journey toward equitable mental health care is just beginning, but together, we can build a world where help is not a privilege—it’s a right.
Let’s make mental health care truly accessible for all.
